A Warning To All Who Make Money With Adsense

Making Money With Adsense Advertising

We all want to make some extra money and we all find it frustrating at times when we don't make enough money from our hubpages and webpages. We may be proud of our work and we may feel the whole world should come and visit to see what a good job we have done. of course, we would also like to make a bit of money from those visitors arriving on the page but I want to warn to be careful to conform with the Adsense Terms & Conditions by showing an example of how precarious your income from Adsense advertising can be.

When you sign up for an Adsense account you have to agree to a whole host of terms and conditions. Most of us wouldn't understand them all if we read them but I doubt many people do anything more than have a quick scan through all the details.

The terms and conditions lay out what you can and cannot do. Much of it is confusing and a lot of things you might do thinking it was ok to do so could turn out to be reason enough for Google to close down your account and refuse to allow you to use their services again even if you think have done nothing wrong yourself.

Be Careful What You Do And Say

To avoid experiencing the wrath of Google and having your adsense account closed you need to do all you can to adhere to the terms and conditions. Take care to follow the specific requirements they lay down but also adhere to the spirit of what they are saying.

Never disclose specifi details about your adsnse income and click-through rates etc.

Never, ever click on your own ads.

Never encourage others to do so.

Actively discourage friends and family from doing so. Even better don't tell them what you do, what webpages you have or how you earn income as they are likely to want to help you earn money and they could get you in trouble.

Never explain on your webpages how you get income from Adsense adverts as visitors may be tempted to do something they see as a way, 'To Help You Out'

Don't try to do anything that might be construed as sneaky or deceitful to get more income. Far better to get a small income regularly than a large one that suddenly disappears.

How One Man Lost His Adsense Income

If you are in any doubt about the warnings given above about how you should be very careful to keep Google happy just read this account of how one man lost a significant adsense income overnight without being intentionally deceitful or trying to cheat the system.

HOW I LOST MY ADSENSE INCOME

The story is of a man who makes films as a journalist and has put some of his films on Youtube and had millions of views and made a significant income from the adsense advertising on that site.

He also runs one other website about his passion for sailing. He is sailing around the coast of the United Kingdom and filming his experiences and the places he visits. He had adsense advertising on his website which was a membership site for fellow sailors who were interested in his experiences and liked to watch his films so they were prepared to pay a small monthly membership fee to watch them..

One day in December and completely out of the blue he suddenly found his adsense account had been shut down for no reason that he could understand. Google simply told him his account was closed. His earnings for that month had been cancelled and returned to the appropriate advertisers and his previous months check for payment had been stopped.

He was earning around 2,500 dollars a month from Adsense and did not believe he was doing anything wrong. Nobody at Google had warned him about anything that he might have done that was causing them any concerns. They simply closed his account and kept his earnings from the previous 6 weeks.

He appealled but was turned down on his appeal and he still doesn't know what he was supposed to have done wrong. He has lost an income of around $2,500 each month and you can imagine how upset and frustrated he must feel.

Even the police will often issue warnings if your driving is a problem but with Google they never seem to issue warnings that something you are doing might be considered against their terms and conditions. They simply cancel your account and never even tell you what you have done wrong.

I have no doubt that there are hundreds and perhaps thousands of people and groups out there who are trying to scam Google Adsense and no doubt many are making fortunes while we struggle to make $100. It is only right and proper that Google goes to great lengths to prevent click fraud and stop cheaters making money from the system but there does seem to be a lack of human interaction with the way their business operates.

I do have some concerns about writing this hubpage because it could be Google would decide anyone who has any criticism of them should have their account cancelled. It is not intended as criticism. It isĀ  a warning to everyone who puts Adsense ads on their pages to conform with the requirements of Googles Adsense Terms And Conditions as well as they possibly can.

It can happen to you and your adsense account could be cancelled overnight so do everything you possibly can to comply with their Terms & Conditions and hope that you are not one of the unlucky innocents who have their accounts cancelled and their income stopped in Googles fight against the real cheaters and scammers who no doubt are making huge amounts of money from adsense advertising.

I don't mean to be harsh but it was the sailing guy's own fault. He even says and I quote:

"I tell them about the revenue for the project which all comes from the website. The more the website earns the more sailing I can do, the more films they see."

In other words, he has suggested that it is beneficial for him if people click on ads, even when the people don't care about the ads. No wonder people start to post that they have clicked on an ad to support him.

We can learn from this lesson by not making this mistake ourself. I can indeed see why this has lead to unusual clicking behaviour and an AdSense account ban.

I agree with you simeonvisser he was careless to talk about his income and that is why I wanted to warn readers here. We can all get careless sometimes and in this case the loss of his acaccount was the result.

I can't help but think that in this case if Google had issued him with a warning and told him what he was doing wtong that would have sorted the problem out. It just seems a bit hard on him that he lost his account when he appears to have been a bit dumb rather than trying to cheat the system.

@Tim: Perhaps a warning would be nice but I can understand from Google's perspective. The whole world can claim that they were not smart enough the first time and that they deserve a second chance.

With so many people involved, it would require a massive team if all of them were allowed to argue and appeal Google's decisions. If Google AdSense was not so large scale they could have used a warning system.

I think that is the benefit and the problem of the internet that everything is so massive it has to be decided by computers. Makes you wonder where it will all end years in the future doesn't it.

Yes, I'm wondering that as well. I'm interested in technoloy so I'm also excited to see how things develop but the internet is increasingly being used for malicious purposes. We really need to learn how to use the internet properly and also what we should not do online.

Firstly, I would like to say this is good information. Secondly, I have to add a little humor in saying I am in no danger at all with losing my adsense account by receiving too many click-throughs. No one seems to click on my ads at all. Maybe it is due to my well written articles and poetry readings. (Humor)They are so captivated that they forget to click on the ads. (Humor)

Hi James Well, I guess all quality authors have to suffer for their work. I hope you get lots of genuine and legitimate clicks for your efforts.

Thanks - I do know a hubber who lost her AdSense account. As we look for backlinks - she went to some site that promised to increase her clicks (even paid for it) - she emailed me to tell me she suddenly had thousands of clicks (which should have been a red flag).

You're right - we are not going to read though the agreement policy. So your hub is a great reminder of the rules - but your hubs also serves as a great reminder too, not to be totally dependent on one source of income.

Thanks a million $$$$$ - and rated up!

Good points well made Simeon.

Cheers for the information Tim, not experienced this myself (yet) and hope to avoid it. Sounds harsh but they usually have a genuine reason to close an account.

Thank you. That was quite sobering, and I think I will proceed immediately to read the Adsense terms carefully. Warning taken.

Rouillie 16 months ago

That seems like a lot of earnings just from ads...I suspect that there may be more to the story than anyone but the parties involved really understand.

Thanks for all the comments and appreciation for this page.

Rouille he was getting millions of views of his videos and the associated ads so I don't think his income was surprising.

IMO, Google should improve the analytic program such that if there is invalid clicks (that comes in high frequency) from a fixed IP address, it should be counted as invalid. (Well, maybe this has been implemented).

I also think that Google should investigate the case and warn the person before closing their account abruptly. (Well, maybe this is too much work for them... with advanced IT, they can make this automated)

I think monetary penalty is a better purnishment than closing the account entirely. Google is in fact losing a good income contributor by closing his account.

Tim Blackstone profile image

Tim Blackstone Hub Author 16 months ago

Ingenira I agree. I would have thought google could automatically ignore clicks that seem suspicious and provide a simple facility for a site owner to use to ignore or even not show ads when certain types of click are happening.

There must be a better way than just closing somebody's account but I guess they have so many they don't care too much about individual users.

This is a warning to all Hubbers too since almost all use Adsense at Hubpages.

I find that most of the sites that can be utilized to make money *ebay, clickbank, google...and yes HP have very little tolerance for breaking (or bending the rules). No warnings or considerations. What ever you have on account with them they take and keep as if you didn't earn it. You can try to appeal or explain...but that usually bears no fruit. I, personally always feel like I am walking on egg shells with these imperialistic websites. I know people take advantage...but some are actually just human and make mistakes; others are just victims of misunderstanding or misperceptions. In any case it is the same result for the "money maker"...adios amigo!

Excellent information and advice. I'm sure that many people are unaware of the terms and conditions in using Adsense as it's very time consuming to sift through the tons of small print but even though it is so time consuming and tedious, it is absolutely imperative that we study and follow these guidelines and rules to the letter if we want to stay on the payroll :)Thanks for sharing this information, Awesome Hub.
