Building Your Own Solar Panel

Why Build A Solar Panel?

Has the time come when you can start building your own solar panel?

For years we have all been burning oil and gas like it would never run out but that time when the oil dries up is fast approaching and we can expect energy prices to rise over the coming years.

There is now a lot more appreciation of the need for us to use less carbon based fossil fuels and start making better use of natural and renewable energy resources. There are several options available to us but one of the simplest is to use solar energy to heat our homes and generate electricity.

There are basically two types of solar panel. The first recovers heat energy from the sun and does an excellent job heating your hot water in your home. The second type converts the sunlight to electricity using photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electricity.

The technology of the photovoltaic solar energy convertion panel has developed considerably since they were first invented forty or more years ago but they remain relatively inefficient at converting that solar power to electricity.

Improvements to the photovoltaic cells continues and efficiency rates are rising but for now it remains expensive to have solar panels installed in your home. They do produce electricity at no cost but you have to recoup the installation costs before you start profiting from the free electricity they supply you with and this can take several years.

A great alternative is to build your own solar panels which can give you a cheap solar energy system that will save you money on your energy costs much faster because you have saved the cost of solar panel installation.

DIY solar panel kits are readily available and usually include all the materials you need together with comprehensive instruction explaining how to install your own solar panels. The simplest systems will charge a battery and be sufficient to power a light for free at night while the larger systems will provide most of your daily power requirements.

If you have some plumbing skills a diy solar panel system for heating your hot water can be a simple and satisfying project that will pay for itself time and time again.

Free Solar Energy

When you are looking at ways to generate your own electricity it is important to keep one thing in mind. Solar energy is free. There is for now no tax on solar energy and you don't have to pay anyone to have it piped to your home.

There are costs for the materials used to build the solar panels and to manage the electricity or hot water produced but once the system is installed it should run at very low cost and all the energy you get is free.

So when you are looking at the cost of a solar panel system also look at the projected cost over 5, 10 or even 20 years. Most panels should continue giving you free energy for many years and none of us know how much electricity could cost in ten years time. One thing we can be pretty sure of is that it will be more expensive than it is now so solar panels could be the best investment you ever make.

Whether you want to save money or save the planet installing a green energy solar installation kit could be something you will be proud to have done for yourself and your family.
