Dreaming What Do Dreams Mean

The Meaning Of Dreams

We all dream but what do dreams mean and why do we dream? According to scientists it is just something we all do. There seem to be no clear answers as to why we dream but it may be part of the way the brain organizes all its thoughts and relates all our experiences together so that when we experience something new we have some sort of reference from past experiences.

We spend a lot of our lives asleep and during that sleeping period we may have several different dreams. It is thought we may have between 5 and 7 dreams during an average eight hour sleep. We usually don't remember anything about them but sometimes we wake up with them very clear in our minds and this is when we can consciously remember them so we can then interpret our dreams.

Why Do We Dream?

It is also thought dreams are a way for the subconscious mind to go through our thoughts and fears and generate possible scenarios and ways to deal with them. The bottom line is that nobody really knows what dreams are all about but we all have them whether we remember them or not.

When you do wake up with a vivid dream in your mind it can be very confusing. How could those things be imagined and what do they mean. There is a lot of knowledge about different types of dreams and there are some well established opinions about what the significance of different types of dreams might be.

Dreaming Of The Future

When we have dreams we may visualize all sorts of events and situations but we are not seeing the future in our dreams. What we see are just some possible scenarios and events. It may be that some of your dreams might turn into reality but you probably dreamt 100 different scenarios of what could happen and one of them turned out to be correct.

Our dreams and our interpretation of dreams can help us understand ourselves and our feelings. There is no ego in our dreams trying to convince us we are better than we are. The reverse is more likely true and we often find our dreams disturbing because they make us face up to our failings and weaknesses but this can very constructive if we can understand what it all means.

Types Of Dreams

We spend a lot of our lives asleep and during that sleeping period we may have several different dreams. It is thought we may have between 5 and 7 dreams during an average eight hour sleep. We usually don't remember anything about them but sometimes we wake up with them very clear in our minds and this is when we can consciously remember them so we can then interpret our dreams.

There are three main types of dreams;
Daydreams
Regular Dream
Nightmares

Daydreams are usually thoughts expressed in a state of semi consciousness. You are thinking about something that is irrelevent to what you are actually doing and retain only a vague knowledge of what is going on around you while you experience it. You may snap out of it on your own or by being disturbed by someone or something overcoming your absent minded state.

Regular dreams can be all sorts of different scenarios from the very ordinary to the extremely weird but not in a frightening way. People from past and present and places you know, or know about, may appear in your dreams in an apparently perfectly normal way. For example Brad Pitt might be your best friend and nobody around you thinks it odd.

Nightmares are something else. These are scary and very uncomfortable experiences that often involve us feeling trapped in a terrible situation with awful things happening around us and we are unable to escape. Nightmares may represent your subconscious thoughts exaggerated to extremes as your subconscious mind looks at the possibilities of a situation or relationship you find yourself in.

I would never advise anyone to change their life on the basis of such a dream but it is worth thinking about why you would be dreaming in such a way. It could be there are changes you could make in your life that would leave you less troubled by such nightmares.

All dreams are very personal but many fit within certain types of dream events so we can all share opinions about what these different types of dreams mean and there is a general consensus on many of these different types of dreams.

Why Did I Dream That?

You wake up and remember at least some of the dream you were having just as you wake up. You think aout it as it is still fresh in your mind and invariably we say, "Why did I dream that?"

Dreams are often strange where things happen that could not or do not usually happen in real life. You can be in a place you have never been with people you have never met. You can speak the same language as the local people even if that feels like a foreign country. Real world physics does not apply in our dreams and you can float or fall forever.

Dreams are the result of what our subconscious is working on at the time and it may be that the frustrations with your real life boss or partner may appear in an odd scenario in your dreams. It's your inner self telling you that things do not seem right. What you do about that is entirely up to you and your conscious mind.

Dreams are

So What Did The Dream Really Mean?

There are some widely accepted interpretations of events that occur in our dreams but none of these should be seen as Your answer. Generally accepted ideas may suggest things but your dreams apply to you alone. they are defined by your very individual subconscious.

As a general guide:

If You Are Falling. If you think about it logically dreaming of falling must mean that something that normally supports you and your life has given way. This dream could be a result of a fear of something collapsing in your life or as a result of something you thought was stable and secure suddenly turning out to be anything but safe and secure.

If you fear something that you rely on collapsing then you should take steps to ensure, as best you can, that it does not fail but if it is something that has already gone wrong, unless you can repair the situation you need to start looking at practical steps for moving on from that event.

If You Are Flying: Flying is thought to be about freedom and you could be either enjoying your freedom or seeking it. The freedom you seek could be from anything in your life but it could represent a wish for freedom from the tyranny of money or anything else. Don't just assume it means some huge life changing event like you want to divorce or to leave your job because it might just mean you want to go on vacation or have a break from routine.

If you are enjoying flying in your dreams it may mean you are very happy and life is going well but if you are struggling to fly or start to fall this could mean something entirely different.

Being Naked: This could mean many things depending on the sort of person you are and what you believe. Some people believe the human body is a disgusting thing that should never be seen while others consider it a beautiful thing that we should be proud of. Your attitudes will have a big effect on what this dream means.

If you think the world would be a better place without clothes being used to make human body a sexual object then being naked could be a feeling of freedom from repression. On the other hand if you feel clothes protect your body from being seen this dream could mean you feel you have been exposed to the world and possibly feel you have been made a fool of.

If Your Are Trapped:

Being trapped can surely only mean one thing. There is some aspect of your life that is leaving you feeling restricted which prevents you doing something or being the person you want to be. t could be any of a number of things but this dream does suggest you should reconsider your life and where you are headed. There could be small changes you could make to help yourself feel more satisfied with life.

These thoughts on dreams are just a simple beginning. Over the centuries there are hundreds of different types of dreams and individual actions have been analysed and interpreted. The appearance of certain items in dreams is said to be for a reason and there are thousands of ways of interpreting each item.

I suggest you take it all as a bit of fun and avoid the temptation to take it all too seriously. It may be the dreams we have are a part of our subconscious thinking but the subconscious is unrestricted by life and the rules of modern life so anything it says is in the simplest of forms, almost childlike. You must decide on the importance of these thoughts and how you interpret them and make use of them in you normal daily life.
