Everlasting Torch Flashlight needs No Batteries

A Torch Needing No Battery

There have been a few developments in torch technology in recent years such as the wind up torch and torches that can be recharged by plugging in to the mains electric but one of the best of the new types of torches uses a very old technology. There everlasting torch, sometimes known as the forever torch, uses a principle discovered by Michael Faraday in the 1800s.

Faraday discovered was that if you move a magnet through a coil of wires you produce an electric current. This was an interesting discovery but was little used until recently when the everlasting torch was developed that never needs batteries.

The torch works by allowing you to shake it for a short while which generates and electric charge which is then stored in a capacitor. This charge can then be released on demand to power an led light. It is quick to charge and the charge powers the led light for a lot longer than the shaking process takes and it means that as an emergency torch you need never worry about the battery being flat as there is no battery involved.

The Perfect Emergency Torch

Most of us keep torches for emergency situations where there is a power outage or if we break down in the car. You may use a torch when camping or doing a variety of other sports.

However you use your torch there is one big problem nearly all torches share and that is that when you go to use it the battery is flat or you use your torch for a while and then the light slowly begins to dim and you know you will be in the dark before too long.

It is situations like this that make a torch you can use and recharge any time and anywhere the perfect emergency torch. If the light starts fading you just give it a shake for a minute and it will continue working for perhaps another 30 minutes or so and when it begins to fade again another quick shake gives you full power once again. You could go on like this for day and you will always have a working torch.

There are some great flashlights out there that can take an unbelievable amount of punishment and continue to work but they all require batteries. An indestructible torch with a flat battery is still a useless torch unless you carry enough replacement batteries with you on your hike but a torch you can recharge with a flick of the wrist will be there and ready to work any time you need light.

Types Of Everlasting Torch Windup Or Shake

There are two main types of hand powered rechargeable torch and these are the wind up torch, otherwise known as a dynamo torch, or the shake torch which uses the Faraday principle for power.

Both work extremely well as an emergency torch which can go unused for several years and then be powered back into life in a few seconds by shaking or winding with no worries about dead batteries. It is probably true to say there is less to go wrong with the shaker torch as the only moving part is the magnet the slides up and down in the chamber within the handle of the torch.

These hand powered torches come with LED bulbs to use less power and LED bulbs do give a slightly different light to standard bulbs. Regular flashlight bulbs give off a slightly yellow light but LEDs light has a bluish tinge which is quite noticeable at first but they are very effective and more energy efficient than regular torch bulbs.

You are so right in saying that torches are normally only used in emergencies and they often fail due to flat batteries, and it can be so frustrating... when you need it and it does not work... thanks for writing an update on torches, most probably will buy one for emergency use, without having to worry about the battery condition. Thanks!!

Hello, hello, 18 months ago

That is a good advice I never knew about it. Thank you.
