Fly Swatter & Fly Gun - A Practical Solution To The Problem Of Flies

How A Fly Swatter Works

Flies are not completely stupid. They do not just sit there waiting to get clobbered by a rolled up newspaper or magazine. They are aware of changes in the air pressure which is why they are difficult to swat with a flat object like a standard magazine held flat.

Rolling up a magazine of newspaper reduces the air pressure build up in front of the object as you swing it through the air and this is why a traditional fly swatter has a series of holes spread throughout its surface. The holes allow air to pass through which reduces air pressure in front of the swatter and the fly doesn't feel anything coming until the swatter actually zaps the fly and kills it.

How To Kill Flies

Flies are at best a nuisance and at worst a health hazard and they have been a problem for mankind for thousands of years so many solutions have been tried over the years.. Flies do have a purpose in the natural order of things but that doesn't mean we have to accept them being a pest in our homes.

There are various chemical based solutions to deal with the problem but if you want to know how to kill flies but you have concerns about releasing chemicals that are designed to kill into your home and into the air you breath you might want to consider a more practical and safer alternative.

One alternative to killing flies with chemicals is the traditional fly swatter but you can also find fly swatters with some modern features and ways of being used which can make them more effective and it can even be fun hunting flies.

Fly Swatting - Choosing Your Weapons

One of the problems with using a fly swatter is that you can end up with squashed bugs on your walls and windows which is not very nice to see and requires cleaning off before it dries and becomes difficult to remove. Fly swatters made with softer materials seem to cause less of a problem when it comes to squashing the flies. The softer materials seems to kill without crushing them and making a mess.

Having less weight in the fly swatter also seems to reduce the degree of squashing and it is faster and easier to flick in the air. So, when choosing our weapon of choice for fly-swatting the first thing we discover is that a softer and lighter fly swatter may be more effective as well as being easier to use.

Electric Bug Swatters - Electric Fly Killer Traps

You may have seen electric fly killers in food stores that electrocute flying insects when they land on the electric wires inside the protective cage. They work well when the bugs are attracted to them but often they almost seem to know and avoid these systems. I have a couple of these in my home and they catch some flies and insects but not all.

You can also get an electric fly swatter that works on a similar principle. Powered by batteries the surface of the swatter is a mesh of electrically powered wires which zap flies if they come into contact with it. These are great for catching those annoying flies that simply buzz around in circles in the middle of the room.

Killing a fly in mid air as it flies around you is not easy, not least because even if you do manage to hit it in mid-flight they seem to bounce off a regular fly swatter almost undamaged. The electric bug swatter zaps flies in mid air and kills them on the spot so, one hit and they are out, cold and dead.

The Fly Shooter Bug Gun

I was given one of these fly shooter bug guns as a gift a couple of years ago. It looked like a kids toy but when I tried it out I found it was remarkably effective and chasing down an annoying fly actually became a fun bug hunt.

It is a simple spring loaded plastic gun that fires a soft plastic mesh fly swatter at the fly. You simply wait for the bug to land and creep up on it. I usually get pretty close to make a certain kill but it does have a range of several feet.

The soft swatter surface is an open mesh which allows the air through and the fly never knows what is coming and the soft flexible plastic used seems to avoid the problem of squashed fly splatter on walls and windows. I never knew killing flies could be so much fun and this would be a great way to keep your kids amused while they do something useful.

I wouldn't want to be without my fly killer gun and I keep a spare just in case I ever break my original one.

Talking Fly Swatter

I just had to mention this talking fly swatter as it seems such an odd but amusing idea. The talking fly swatter is a bit of fun and a great talking point at a gathering that is interrupted by flies and bugs.

The talking fly swatter makes various remarks such as "gotcha" when used and everyone will want to have ago with this. The talking fly swatter will make a great fun gift for friends or family.

I came up with a neat way to kill flies years ago, strange but effective. I had a jar of maple syrup set on my coffee table, lid handy and nearby. Flies would land on the edge and I'd trap them in the jar. At least they died happy!!!

Hey Sweetsusieg. That's a great idea but I can imagine guests might be tempted to help themselves while you were out of the room. They might get more than they bargained for..lol

A little trick that I have picked up as a veteran fly swatter is to always angle the swatter so that the angle of attack is forward of the fly. No matter how light the swatter is, the fly will detect its approach and attempt to take off just before the swatter strikes. If the swatter is positioned in front of the winged beast, it will literally fly into a smash-fest. If you attack the fly from behind it can usually fly away, eluding the splat.

Hi Marisaupa. Good point. I think the flies always have to move forward when they take off so you are right to be one step ahead of the little critters.

Hi Tim,

Okay, the first video made me scream out Ouch! LOL.

I actually like that one. Still, I would never get it. My son will play with it. LOL.

The second video made me think about my son, and I know I would never even entertain the thought of buying a fly gun, because of my son. LOL. He will think it is his toy. LOL.

This is a really informative article.

I really did not know they had so many types of Fly Swatters until you mentioned it in the comments section of my article which you have read on the same subject matter.

I cannot get over the Fly Shooter Gun. LOL.

I do not need my son to find out about the Fly Shooter Gun. LOL.

Thanks for sharing.

Take Care,

N.E.
