Thieves could easily disconnect and drive off with your generator if it is not secured in some way so get a big padlock and chain and either find something you can secure the generator to where you plan to use it or concrete a large metal ring into the ground so you can chain the generator up to that when it is supplying you with power.

Hospitals, data centers and many other business purchase, lease or buy generators which are permanently wired in so that the instant the power shuts down the generator will cut in and there is no noticeable drop off of power or electricity supply.
If you have the money and you feel your home needs an emergency standby generator that will allow you to continue with your daily life as if nothing had happened when the power grid goes down you can invest in an emergency generator system just like those used by hospitals nd data centers where power supply is critical.
They do require you to invest several thousand dollars but if you have the money and the need they are an excellent investment.
