How To Store Stuff In A Modern Home

Once common trait we all have these days is buying things. We all have heaps of stuff we have bought and don't want to throw away but where can we put it all and we need the solution to how to store stuff.

In fact there are several solutions and how you store stuff depends on what the things are you need to store. Obviously delicate things need more protection than something like, say, soft toys which will in most cases be fine even if they get crushed by other things.

The type of home you have and the spaces you have available will also be a big factor in the most appropriate way of storing things and you can also consider adding built in cabinets and closets in any spare and unused spaces you have.

The Minimalist Approach To Storage Problems

If you are of the minimalist persuasion the solution should be simple. You just throw everything out that you haven't used in the last week or two. You need to be a bit sensible about this though. Don't throw out the guest bed just because you haven't had any guests stay over in the last month.

The same rules apply with your furniture. You may have a favorite chair and you only ever use that chair but it would be better to have somewhere for a guest to sit even if that chair is rarely used. Unless you prefer life without visitors, of course.

Minimalism is all about clear spaces and the least items you need to be on show even if you own a lot of things so lots of built in storage space is a requirement for that clean minimalist look.

Storage For Kids Toys And Clutter

Tidy homes and kids are not the most automatic of combinations. In fact it takes a lot of work to keep a tidy home when you have kids. Mess seems to breed around kids. You can tidy things up, walk out of the room and come back two minutes later to find the room looks like there has been a toy explosion.

It is in the nature of kids to have minds like a butterfly where they switch from one thing to another and then on to something else. Invariably that involves more toys and things appearing but you can try to educate them in tidy ways. It may seem like an endless struggle at times but kids can learn to be at least less untidy if never actually very tidy, but they can learn to improve their ways.

Lots of storage boxes or cabinets with drawers and compartments work well for kids toys. A window seat with a toy box underneath the seat can hold an enormous collection of kids toys and it takes only moments to tidy them up and have them disappear from view.

Storage boxes can usually be stacked together in a closet or large unit of furniture with lots of free space or you can get good looking furniture units which may be intended for office use which have large cavernous drawers intended for storing hundreds of files. Wood finished filing cabinets can fit in very well with your regular lounge furniture and they can quickly hide a ton of stuff without looking out of place.

Plastic Storage Boxes

The introduction of plastic storage boxes has made life a whole lot easier and cheaper for those of us who want a simple way to store stuff fast and easy. Plastic storage boxes have several benefits over most alternative. They are cheap, they are remarkably strong and can usually be securely stacked. They can be see through or fully colored to enable you to see the contents without opening them up or to obscure whatever they contain.

Better quality plastic storage boxes offer an incredibly tough storage system and can take an enormous amount of punishment. Cheaper versions are tough but not quite so rugged but the strong plastic box storage systems in use in various industries, not least the package delivery services, proves just how tough and resilient plastic storage boxes can be.

Plastic Storage Crates

A very efficient alternative to using the plastic storage box is the storage crate. These have been developed as a cheaper version of the box and the savings are made by making the storage crate open to the air by leaving open space between the structural framework of the case.

Plastic storage crates are often collapsible so when they are not in use they take up very little space. This allows them to be stored ready for use and after use without requiring the large amount of space that empty storage boxes would require.

They are usually stack-able and amazingly strong considering how lightweight they are. Lightweight plastic storage crates offer a very efficient means of storing a lot of stuff while being cheap to buy and have the huge advantage of being collapsible for easy storage when not in use.

Great suggestions. I like a lot of space, but not really often getting it right - built in storage space beneath beds and benches or chairs sounds great to me, and, of course, large toy boxes for the kids are always handy.

I try to think minimalist but often find that I keep storing things rather than throwing away or donate unuse items. There's always the 'what if I need it in the future?' and everything just keeps piling up. Spring cleaning is inevitable but how much I could clean is another matter.

Thanks for the comments. They do say about money that the more you have, the more you want and I think it is true about space as well. We never seem to have enough for all our 'stuff'.

We either have to be very organized about managing storage or declutter and keep very little. I guess we all have to find the right balance between the two alternatives.
