Human Memory Loss And Improving Memory

What Is Memory And Why Memory Loss Matters

When our memory is not so good as it used to be as when we were young we can become frustrated but at least we remember it used to be better than it is now. So, what is memory? It is the ability to recall previous events and as if by magic we can conjure up in our minds images and facts we remember from the past. Sometimes it seems to work by itself and thoughts and memories appear in our thoughts with no prompting from us. Other times we purposely recall facts and situations we want to remember for some reason.

Our human memory is the most remarkable thing. It allows us to learn from our experiences and we can choose to do things the same again, or differently, when faced with similar situations in the future. It allows us to learn and progress and without memory the human race would never have progressed beyond living in caves.

Memory loss is therefore very important to us because we feel less capable and we become frustrated that we are no longer the mentally agile person we used to be. Memory loss makes our lives more difficult, initially in small ways, as we try to manage the day to day things and struggling to recall things we know we should remember.

Memories Of What We Were

The only certain fact we have in our lives is that one day we will die. When we die the only things we leave behind are other people with their memories of who we were, how we lived and what we did in our life. Keeping the memory of someone dear to us is a way of keeping them alive in our hearts and minds, so it is important for us and as a way of showing respect for them that we remember the people we meet and the things they have done.

People change us. We meet people every day and each in some small way has an impact on our own lives. We may learn from them, we may learn things we don't like about them but in some way or another the things we learn are committed to memory and affect how we lead our lives in the future.

Sometimes those people have a huge impact and change the course of our future completely. The favorite teacher at school may have inspired us to go on and do something in our future career that we would never have done if it had not been for one segment of one lesson when they talked about something so inspiring we decided that this was what we wanted to do for our career.

Sometimes the change is less obvious but no less fundemental. We meet someone and something changes. We may not feel it instantly but a seed is sown in our mind and in the course of time our lives are never the same again. It could be friendship or it could be love but our lives are changed because of what we experienced and what we remembered of that meeting.

We remember those significant moments and how they have changed our lives. Our memory is what makes us human and it is fundamental to our development. Where would we be without our memory? It is very hard to imagine what it would be like if we had a limited memory that could only recall what we had done in the last few seconds or even the last few days but, fortunately, we can remember things from years ago and learn from our experiences.

Managing Memory Problems And Improving Memory

When we first notice lapses in memory we may laugh it off or become slightly irritated by our failing but as time goes on it becomes an ever present fact of our lives that the things we used to remember so easily are more difficult to recall.

We can exercise our minds and exercise memory by keeping ourselves mentally active. We can run through lists of facts we want to try to remember but with so many memories our minds seem to become clogged up and confused by so much information.

Making lists can be a great reassurance and whilst it may be admitting defeat in some ways it is also a very practical way of managing the problem of remembering important things. Keep a small notebook handy and if at any time you think of something you want to remember, write it down.

The simple act of writing it down may be enough to help you fix that thought in your mind and recall it in the future but if not, you have it in your notebook. All these activities can help to train your memory and help your mind work faster when trying to recall the things you need to remember.

Some foods are said to help maintain memory and there are vitamin supplements which some people find very helpful. As always a healthy diet including fresh fruit and vegetables is said to bring benefits to helping improving memory and there have been several examples where mental activity has been shown to improve from eating healthy diet instead of over processed foods.
