How To Make A Safe Or Buy Secret Hidden Compartment Safe To Hide Your Valuables
73Reasons To Make A Safe
In a perfect world safes would never have needed to be invented and we would not need any home security at all. In a slightly less than ideal world we would all be able to afford a top quality home safe to protect our valuables. Unfortunately, in the real world we live in today many of us have little spare money and our valuables that would not be worth as much as a good safe would cost to buy.
We may understand the need for securely storing our valuables but the cost is simply to great to justify the expense of a safe. If this scenario applies to you or, if you want a little project for your kids to do on a rainy day, you can make your own disguised valuables storage container for very little money and it may protect your valuables from an opportunist thief.

What Is A Disguised Valuables Storage Container?
Disguising your valuables storage container can make life difficult for criminals to steal your valuables. Sometimes referred to as diversion safes, diversion cans and diversion books or anything else that confuses the eye as to what the real purpose of the container is. Criminals don't want to get caught so they try to avoid attracting attention or getting caught in the act by spending too long in their nefarious endeavours and we should be thankful that this is the case as it gives us a chance to help protect our valuables from thieves by making them harder to find.
You most likely have a kitchen cabinet with cans of baked beans and soups and goodness only knows what other tins of food in it. A less than determined thief is hardly likely to be searching through your bean cans which is why these types of small safes are known as. Well, that is the theory. The reality may be that criminals are well aware that we might hide our valuables anywhere and they will search everywhere. Well, they will if they have the time but most will be in a rush and with a bit of luck a valuables store disguised as a baked beans can may get ignored.
You can buy all types of disguised money safes and they can be purchased in the form of various food cans with imitation labels, hollowed out books and even clocks with space to store valuables. These are not likely to fool the determined thief but they might go unnoticed by the more amateur criminals and they all add extra time to the act of committing the crime when they want to be in and out in under ten minutes.
Make A Safe From A Book
It is easy to make a secret safe from an old hardback book but it does involves the use of a very sharp knife so take care if you do this.
Choose an old hardback book that you no longer want or need. Make sure it is about one third bigger in thickness, height and width than the storage compartment you need.
Open the book a few pages in and mark out the storage area on the page and cut through all of the pages until you are nearly at the back of the book. Next you need to glue the pages together either individually, page by page or simply glue them all by covering the cut surfaces with a hot glue gun to seal the inner compartment and secure all the pages together.
When you finish the book should look like any ordinary book when it is closed but when you open it up you will see your secret safe inside.

Make An Aerosol Can Into A Secret Safe
We all have lots of aerosols around the home and it is not unusual to have several of them together in a cabinet or closet. This makes them an ideal candidate to be a hidden secret safe in almost any room in the house.
You will need an old empty aerosol can a small screw top jam-jar that will fit snugly inside the can and a hot glue gun.
To make your secret compartment aerosol you must first make sure the can is completely empty of pressure by holding down the release valve for some time after the spray contents appear to have finished. When you are sure the can is safely emptied you need to take a can opener to the base of the can. Remove the whole base and put it to one side to reuse later.
Clean out the can and remove the feed tube by pulling it out through the base of the can. Thoroughly clean the interior of the can to remove any residue or smell. Take the lid of the jar and glue it in the center of the inside surface of the base of the can. When the glue sets screw the jar back into the lid and put glue around the sides of the jar. Slide the jar back into the can so the base of the can is tight up against the can and allow the glue to set.
Once the glue has hardened you should be able to unscrew the base of the can from the glass jar it is attached to and you can place your valuables in the jar before screwing the base back on the can to complete your secret safe you made.

Secret Compartment Inside Regular Items
Here's some secret compartment safes that you could make yourself but the store supplied versions may be the easier and cheaper option.
A great secret compartment safes is one inside a wall clock. It looks perfectly normal and it is a real working clock but it has a secret compartment behind the clock face where you can store a few valuable items. We all need clocks so it's great to have one with dual uses.
One of the best disguises is to blend in with normal everyday things and the wall socket safe is a perfect example. Unless a thief is going to remove every wall socket in the house they may not discover it at all. It looks like a normal outlet but is in reality it hides a small secret compartment in the wall behind it. Finally, I think the best of the lot for smaller items is the real candle with a secret compartment hidden inside. Such a brilliantly simple idea and probably too much trouble for a thief to check every candle in your home.

Make A Safe - Conclusions
Some final thoughts on disguised secret storage safes
1. Disguised safes will not stop a determined thief but they may be missed in their haste to get out quickly.
2. You can make your own versions which may be less common and less well known.
3. If you don't have a hot glue gun or a crafting knife etc, it may be cheaper to buy a hidden can safe or book safe rather than having to buy the tools first.
If you plan to make a disguised can safe you really need to get a can opener that leaves no sharp edges. These safe edge can openers are superb and I have one myself. They don't cut the can. Instead they cut the seam that joins the lid to the can body. This leaves a smooth edged removable lid that fits back on the can and looks like it was never removed. These can openers leave no sharp edges at all so they are well worth having for opening cans in the kitchen.. I recommend these even if you don't plan to make a can safe.
And Finally.....
If you have money to burn and you really want to impress your friends and neighbors why not buy a real safe and keep your baked bean cans in it. You never know what the price of a can of beans might be one day and a fireproof safe means the beans will taste good whatever happens.. :o)
