Designing Model Railroad Track Plans

When you start out to build a model railroad layout you need to have a good idea of what you hope to end up with because otherwise you will be adding bits and pieces in a very disorganized way.

You need to start out with a plan and you should try to get some help to decide on the overall shape of your model railway layout. You would be wise to get yourself a book of model railway track plans so you know what is possible when done by experienced model railway enthusiasts.

Time spent thinking about how your railroad layout will look and how well it will all work when it is finished will save you a heck of a lot of time making corrections along the way.

A Model Railroad Scene

Building Model Railroad Techniques

There are lots of different ways of making the mountains roads and streams you want on your railroad layout and trial and error could waste many hours producing something you will never be entirely happy with. The best approach is to benefit from the experience of fellow model railroad enthusiasts who have spent years developing the best ways of doing these things.

If you are able to join a local society of model railroaders and go to meetings you can ask for advice and tips from your fellow enthusiasts but if you do not have any regular contacts who can give you advice you should get some good books to study the subject.

Building the ultimate model railroad layout requires learning tips and techniques you may not even have thought about before and a useful guide is Model Train Help which is a downloadable ebook you can purchase and print out or read within minutes on your computer screen. Hubpages refuses to allow me to provide a link to it for some strange reason so you will have to search Google who are more than happy to provide a link. Alternatively there are many very good quality books on the subject available from Amazon at very little cost and you can see some listed below.

Model Railway From Start To Finish

Deciding What Model Railway Layout You Can Have

We are all limited in time, money and space. Some of us have more time and others have more money but most of us can use only a limited area of space for our model railway layout. There are ways to make the most of the space we have and this is an area where having a guide to model railway track plans can really help you out.

Once you have decided on the model railway scale you want to use, take a look through your book of track model railroad track plans and see if they have anything in the same scale for a similar area to the space you plan to use.

If you are lucky they will have exactly the sort of layout you want to build but if not you may need to take a portion of a larger model railway network and use that as your guide. If you take a section of a larger model railway layout like this you will have to adapt it where the lines would be cut off but you should be able to work out a neat way of joining the loose ends to make a comprehensive model railway layout.

If you have some sections of track where everything seems to be too close together a great tip is to raise one of the lines by building the track up on a mountain scene and having the other track run through a tunnel underneath.

It helps to try to think in three dimensions as raised areas of track allow for water features with bridges and viaducts and mountain scenes with trains crossing high bridges and going through tunnels.

Refer back to your book of model railway track plans to make sure that what you are planning is possible and achievable but when your model railroad layout is complete you will have something you will be truly proud to show off to your friends and you will be able to enjoy the hobby of model train layouts for many years to come.

British Model Railway Enthusiasts

There seem to be a lot of Brtish Model Railway fans visiting here and there are a few differences in the terms used to describe model railroads, or model railways for example. For any British railway enthusiasts who may be disappointed that all the ads on this page are for US products I prepared another page of British Model Railway Track Plans for all you British model train enthusiasts that shows some british model railway track plans available in the UK.

Hi Frank, Yes model trains are the best hobby. It is a pity they are so expensive in your area. I guess you will just have to be very specific about which items you purchase for your railroad layout but it is a long term hobby building a model railroad so take your time. Good luck.

Great tips on choosing a layout. There aren't alot of people that can claim the whole basement for a recreation of the orient express. With a little knowledge and the right scale it seems you can have a great layout with limited space. Thanks for this hub!

That's one mighty mountain range that you have built there! I use to be quite into model railways and created a number of different layout and sets. Your right to say that planning is all important, I think my first layout took over a year to build due to general disorganization and forever taking the layout apart and moving it around which made the whole experience rather tedious and frustrating. After that experience I learnt my lesson and drew up a plan for my second layout which I completed far quicker and enjoyed completing ten times as much!

Newspaper mountains... great tip. That's not only a time saver but a money saver as well. Sure beats buying, cutting and shaping foam. I'm glad you mentioned that building a layout is a time consuming process, In fact, it is an ongoing process as you continually come up with new ideas as you are building.

Great tips on building a layout.

I think if your clever with it newspaper can work just as well as foam and can be moulded better to fit.

Just checked out the link to your real site. What a resource, you must have been into this for a long while.

I am currently making a city landscape for my set. I had a rolling hills landscape (with the newspaper ;) but wanted something different.

Keep posting man
