Manage Your Money With A Household Budgeting System

In the good old days, before computers were invented people used a very simple household budgeting system. When the weekly income came in it was divided up and a portion was put into jars or tins for each expense that was due.

This was back before credit cards and even bank accounts were commonplace. Everyone used cash for just about everything. It was much simpler then. You have the cash coming in and regular cash payments going out on rent and food and heat and light.

The dawning of the age of credit cards, personal loans together with subscriptions for TV, cellphones and many other things began to make life very complicated and confusing. Our income was no longer the deciding factor in what we could afford because the use of credit cards confused things. Using plastic you could spend more than you earned but the price was that you ended up paying more in the long run due to interest charges and it made budgeting a whole lot more complicated.

Use The Financial Tools We Have Available

We may sometimes wish we were back in the old days when life was so much less complicated but there are so many benefits of modern life that we would probably not like it as much as we think. What we need to do is to use the financial tools available in the modern world to help us stay in control of our money.

We need to use the power of a computer combined with some good quality personal financial software to keep on top of our financial situation and to help manage our personal finances.

Use Your Computer To Help With Budgeting

Budgeting in the household of today requires a degree of maths skills but it is possible to do it with pen, paper and a calculator but with so many expense items to consider and the need to plan ahead for some irregular payments using household budgeting software can make working out the numbers a whole lot easier.

Household budgeting software is available from several companies and they all aim to make entering the figures and working out the budget as simple as possible. Some are more expensive than others and may do more things. Some are capable of helping you manage your business finances if you run a small business but you should look out for software that provides the help you need and not look for anything too complicated.

You may find demos and trial download offer available online and this can be a great way of deciding if the home budgeting financial software is suitable for you but be warned. You may sped a long time entering figures into the trial software and if you decide not to buy the full version your work may be wasted.

Why You Should Work Out Your Household Budget

If you are struggling with your bills and have credit card debt problems you may not want to spend more money on financial software to do your household budgeting. You may not even have a computer. So how are you reading this webpage? I guess a lot of people have access to computers at work and in libraries or other places but maybe not at home but whatever the reasons, you might want to work out your household budget with a pen and paper.

A household budget sets out how much money is needed each week or month to pay the bills that are due. It helps you to understand where all that money goes and we all must sometimes wonder if it just disappears as it always seems to disappear so quickly.

You need to set out the details of your income and spending each month so you can add it all up and work out if you are spending too much in certain areas such as entertainment and if you have enough money coming in to cover your bills.

Work Out Your Household Budget

You need to keep track of where you spend money and how much you spend. Using a computer allows you to group expenses together in categories so you know how much is going on certain types of expenses but you can do this yourself. Write down a list of the different types of spending you have like household expenses for rent or mortgage payments, heating, lighting, buildings insurance and phone bills.

If you have loans or credit cards you need a budget group to list these in. List each credit card or loan and write down the payments you usually make but it can be useful to also write down the minimum payment required in brackets next to it. This is so you can consider reduced payments if there is not enough money to cover all your other monthly expenses but it is usually best to pay off as much as you can manage to keep interest costs down.

Set out another section for transport and put the cost of running your car and any bus or cab fares in this section too. You will need another group for things like movies, tv charges, meals out and any other entertainment related costs. You should also allow something towards the cost of new clothes and any other occasional costs so if you reckon to spend X amount on clothes in a year put down x/12 for a monthly allowance.

Food can be put in the household expenses section or you can give it a section to itself. It is one area where we can control costs to some extent unlike rent or mortgage payments so having it a category all to itself makes it easier to see the result of any changes we make in our food shopping habits.

Finally you need to add up all the numbers and then compare your monthly spending with your income and hope that there is money left over. Some of the numbers may shock you because we spend money day by day without seeing that it adds up quite a bit over the month. If the numbers show there is not enough money to pay for everything then you need to consider what can be changed in you spending behaviour or if you can increase your income.

By carrying out this budgeting exercise you can get a better understanding of your financial situation and you will be able to plan how you manage your money from the monthly income you get. You can purchase books that give much more specific guidance on how to work out your budget but you should now get the basic idea of what you need to do.

If you decide to use household budgeting software on your computer, it will enable you to work out a very comprehensive and accurate budget which can be calculated months in advance. You can also produce lots of pretty graphs which are very good for showing if your financial situation is getting better or worse month on month.

Alternatively you can sit down with a pen and paper and spend an evening working out the numbers but whichever route you take, working out a budget will help you manage your money better.

Planning a household budget has let our family accomplish many financial goals like becoming debt free and buying our first home. Now that we have bought our first home and have a mortgage we can no longer say we are debt free but we are working towaqrds paying it off so much faster than 30 years.

There is such a great feeling of freedom to be completely debt free. It's hard work to get there especially if you were as far in the hole as we were, but it is possible. It requires sacrifice, going without the "toys" everyone else has, and everyone in the family being on the same page--but it is so worth it!

We try and pay cash for expenses like food and gas, when the money runs out that's it. We then pay our bills online through our banks free online bill pay. Cut up the credit cards. Get an emergency fund.

We have learned a lot from Dave Ramsey and recommend his books and stuff to anyone who is struggling financially.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It's cheaper in the long run to avoid the interest from debt and going without all the 'toys' that everyone seems to think are so important can enable you to appreciate the good things in life like the feeling of freedom you talked about.

Good luck and I hope you get that mortgage paid off before too long.
