Socks Are Clothing To Show Your Colorful Personality
The History Of The Sock
Is there any piece of clothing more similar throughout history than the sock? Look at any drawing or painting of anyone from history during the last thousand years and they will probably be wearing socks or stockings and most of the stockings fro history would be called socks today.
Socks would only have appeared after the development of shoes as a sock is something worn inside a shoe. The original socks were probably a large leaf wrapped around the foot and later leather from animal skins gathered up and tied at the ankle but with the discovery of knitting socks were knitted by hand and then ultimately by machine knitting.
The Original Sock
Socks still continue to fulfil that purpose but they also offer a subtle outlet for our playful personality. Even the most staid and apparently dull people allow themselves to go a little bit mad with their socks. Perhaps because they are not quite so obvious as what top you wear or the tie you choose it seems more acceptable to wear wild and colorful socks and its great to live in a world where we can wear whatever socks we like best.
Walk into any store and you will see vast arrays of different types of socks. Short socks, long socks, thick and thin socks. Socks in a multitude of colors and patterns made from many different materials but, at the end of the day, they are all socks. One of the most varied and flexible items of clothing that is worn by both sexes and one that allows you to show off something about your personality and your approach to life.
Christmas Socks
There are lots of seasonal christmas socks out there with images of Santa, snow and Christmas trees. Reindeer socks are always popular and are just the thing to wear over the holiday festival.
Knee High Socks
If you suffer from cold in the calf area of your leg then knee high socks could be the solution but they are also great as a style of dress. Colorful knee high socks will make a statement and with the larger area they offer there is plenty of opportunity to say something about yourself with the patterns and colors you choose.
If you wear rain boots you will find knee high socks perfect to reduce any problems with rubbing and chaffing on your legs. An additional benefit is that they will help keep your leg warm.
Thigh High Socks
Thigh high socks are not for everyone but they are great for keeping warm when the weather is cold and they look great.
Some people consider them a bi trashy but that's because they can be quite sexy when worn with a short skirt because they tend to focus the eye on the thighs. but only if you wear a short skirt or shorts. If you are uncomfortable with that then they may not be for you but they do come with some eye catching patterns and designs.
If you want to make a statement about yourself thigh high socks can do that if you want them to.
Ankle Socks
If there is such a thing as a typical sock it would most likely be the ankle sock.
Popular with both men and women ankle socks are available made from various materials and a multitude of colors.
Most sports socks are ankle socks and this is probably due to the fact that an ankle sock can easily be a self supporting sock with an elasticated top to keep the sock in place.
Slipper Socks
The term Slipper Socks is often used to describe two slightly different types of footwear. They can be either socks to wear inside boots where they just slip over the food and do not usually reach as high as the ankle but they may also be socks worn as slippers.
The slipper sock used as an around the house shoe is most often a knitted shoe with either a soft rubber sole or some protective rubber patches attached to the base which give some grip and reduce the risk of slipping and sliding on a polished floor surface.
The slipper sock for wearing inside a boot or shoe is a thin knitted sock made from various materials and is intended to reduce the risk of injury to the foot through rubbing and at the same time helping to keep the foot warm.
Slipper socks may also be referred to as no-show or low cut socks because they are designed not to be seen.
Running Socks For Jogging
If you go jogging or do even more serious running you will need a good quality jogging sock. When you first start out you may be comfortable with ordinary socks for jogging but as soon as you begin to increase the number of miles you run you will begin to find your feet suffering from rubbing and blisters.
Jogging socks will be supersoft next to the skin and most likely padded under the foot. Seams should be smooth to avoid rubbing but not all sports socks are so make sure you get sports socks intended for runners. I used to run with my socks turned inside out to put any seams on the outside which was very good for my feet when jogging many miles.
Socks For Diabetics
People who suffer from diabetes may be more likely to experience foot ulcers due to higher blood sugar levels so they require better foot protection than people who do not have these problems. Diabetic socks are designed to cushion and protect feet to reduce the risk of damage to the feet.
A diabetic sock should avoid any protruding seams and be properly shaped with a heel to fit the foot well. Tube type socks are best avoided. Extra cushioning may be beneficial in some cases but the best approach is to get advice from your podiatrist to find out what type of sock is appropriate for your particular situation.
Ski Socks
You will not be surprised to know that ski socks are so named because they are designed for skiing but they are excellent socks for keeping the feet warm at any time.
Usually an under the knee length sock they are usually made as a thicker sock to help keep feet and lower leg warm. originally made from pure wool they are now often made available using some of the advanced thermal insulating materials that also benefit from good wicking properties to reduce the cooling effects of sweat collecting within the sock material.
Travel Support Socks
When travelling you want comfortable socks but when flying you may want the extra support and reassurance supplied by specialist travel socks.
When flying and spending long periods of time sitting still very occasionally people suffer from lower leg thrombosis which can potentially, though fortunately very rarely, be fatal.
Travel socks are designed to compress the leg and help keep the blood flowing properly when flying. They are normally strongly elasticated so whilst they do compress the leg they remain flexible and comfortable.
Toe Socks - Socks With Toes
One of the more unusual and interesting types of socks is the toe sock. This is the sock they must have meant when they said, 'Fits Like A Glove' because this is a sock made like a glove for the feet. Instead of fingers on a glove we have toes on the sock.
Some people love them and others may hate them but they certainly stand out as something different to the usual plain sock.

Thanks to you, Tim, my sock knowledge has increased exponentially. I will no longer wander around stocking-challenged!
Hi Tim
Socks are most definitely clothing to show your personality but they aren't the most flattering items of clothing that one can wear! I loved your explanation of the first socks ever.
Amber:)
When you think about it socks have come a long way. Great selection here
I don't do ankle socks cause they tend to ride off during the day and I can't pull 'em back up. Maybe I'm wearing them wrong... Great hub. Sock it to me baby!
Nice hub. Now i understand the evolution of socks. And each use and the different kinds of socks.
Thanks!

My daughters love bright colorful, knee high, toe socks! Sometimes they can be hard to find, but I can usually find some around Christmas time. Guess what they get for Christmas? LOL
Great hub! I didn't know there were "that" many different types of socks.
